ARTBLANCHE: Fine Art Photography

The artblanche.com fine art gallery is launching with some previously exhibited work and some newly created work.

The Artblanche Gallery is a collection of figurative nudes that were created for art gallery prints. The prints are sold as digital prints as well as Fine Art Giclée Prints:


These giclée prints have extraordinary depth and detail, while maintaing all the tonalities of the original photograph. Giclée prints have surpassed silver halide photographic output in color range and longevity. Printed on fine art paper, these prints have a beautiful matte finish, superior blacks, and are reminiscent of traditional fiber based photo papers.

Many of the limited prints have been exhibited through Chicago galleries, and have sold to private collectors as far as Australia.

Since its inception in 2004 the ZhouB Art Center has become an institution for Bridgeport and for Chicago. It is a venue for exhibitions and concerts of the most diverse nature and established itself as an important cultural center on the city's South Side. The center currently houses 12 artist studios and has hosted over 50 exhibitions, festivals and installations.

Director and curator Oskar Friedl has selected works from every current resident as well as works from past shows that have been installed at the ZhouB Art Center. "The exhibition is a direct reflection of the diversity of artists that have worked here and the wide variety of events that we were able to accommodate in the galleries."

The Zhou Brothers started the ZhouB Art Center 2004 together with their long time curator, Oskar Friedl. Having come from China in 1987, the Zhou Brothers have established themselves as the leading artists in Chicago and relized a life long dream to start a "Creation Center". "We have been fortunate enough to be able to give back to the community and start a new exciting movement with the ZhouB Center," ShanZuo Zhou says. "My brother and I have been inspired by so many good art spaces around the world that we wanted to provide a platform for Chicago art as well as contribute to the richness of the cultural landscape of this great city," adds DaHuang Zhou. The ZhouB Center has become a bridge point for Asian art in America but has attracted artists and shows from almost every part of the world.

This 5 year survey is a document of the past as well as an outlook into the future. Started by artists and following the concept of the 'Kunsthalle,' a contemporary art space serving the immediate community, the ZhouB Art Center now is an intricate part of the Chicago art scene. In the coming year the ZhouB Art Center plans to add an art school to this unique development and foster new and young talent from the Chicago land area.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Oxygen Network about my photography. Oxygen is in their third season of the hit show Bad Girls Club featuring a playmate model who I had previously worked with (Sarah Michaels of Sussex, WI), and the producers now want to use one of my photos of Sarah for promoting the show. Sarah is also famous locally as a Race Stopper Girl, and internationally as a Playboy special editions model. Look for this photo & more by Mike White on the Oxygen website, and in upcoming episodes.

Tattooed Millionaires

Concert photos of last night's show (July 11 2007) of the Tattooed Millionaires at the Kinetic Playground in Chicago which is home of drummer Justin Sandler. Justin is also well known as a model, and contacted me through the popular site Model Mayhem. Even though the bands tour bus broke down on the way to the show, they played an awesome high energy set of Iggy and the Stooges style music, and even covered a classic T.Rex tune in one of their four encores. Currently, they are listed as MySpace's Top 100 Unsigned Bands. Don't miss them next time they're on tour!

Greg Ashley's Medicine F*** Dream at Beat Kitchen in Chicago

Multi-instrumentalist Greg Ashley who has gained acclaim and recognition as frontman of Oakland's Gris Gris, is going solo for the first time since his 1993 masterpiece Medicine F*ck Dream. The Gnomes open for this show at the Beat Kitchen April 22. Here's a photo from The Gris Gris show last year.

Gnomes II

Chicago indie rockers - The Gnomes - performed at the Hideout last week to promote their newly released album "Gnomes II". I was honored to work with the band in photographing the inner artwork for the CD, which you can buy at CDBaby.com or download on iTunes

The photo session was extensive, and we ended up with enough for a large pictorial of different looks. A great bunch of guys to work with!

The Gnomes Official Site has a few downloads of the new CD, as well as schedule info on their upcoming shows. You can always check out what's new with the Gnomes on MySpace.

Will Oldham, the brains and brawn behind several musical achievements is indeed a mysterious man. With significant displays of expertise in the arts of songsmithery, acting and Ivy-League education, this Jack-Of-All-Trades is making quite a name for himself. What name that may be has become arguable. Known by such bizarre monikers as Palace, Palace Music, Palace Brothers, and his most recently used Bonnie "Prince" Billy, this Kentucky-born singer/songwriter makes "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" look normal. His music has been categorized (perhaps incorrectly) under the "alt country" genre of music, though his style seems to fit into more of a lo-fi, indie sound loosely based in the anti-folk movement formed in the mid-90’s. Often mistaken for an old man due to his rugged looks, sparse guitar pickings, and biblical dialect, Oldham has become a collaborator with many well-known musicians of this era. He has most recently been widely acknowledged for the record of cover songs he released with Tortoise last year. Though Oldham has also played with a multitude of talented musicians including, but not limited to Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan (of Smog), Bjork, and even the late Johnny Cash. Oldham exceeds the boundaries of today’s music, incorporating soothing chords and enigmatic lyrics to form some of the most beautiful ballads currently playing.
